Behind Homage

About Homage

Homage is a reconstruction of the already existing Aktiv-Grotesk font family. When creating this font specifically for the cafe I had to consider the research that I had done on the music prior to this point. Not only did I consider the musical aspects but I also dove into the print materials made within this genre. From research, planning, and creating this font it took about three weeks to lock in the font family now known as Homage. This font takes the edginess of the genre and puts more texture into the existing Aktiv-Grotesk keeping it clean yet unique.

Behind the Process

Since I was reconstructing a pre existing font, I had to keep its structure in the back of my mind when creating this new font for the cafe. Initially I started with a lot of hand drawn explorations before moving digitally to explore more brush/grittier options that were similar to how text looks like when printed on paper. Since majority of the Trip-Hop media was printed (when at its peak) I wanted to convey that into the font. I also wanted to keep the legibility of this font while giving it a rough texture that relates to the print side of the genre but also the darker atmosphere of the music (edgy).
