About The Bristol

The Bristol is a Trip-Hop Coffee shop that caters to fans of the music genre and hosting live music performances inside their cafe/venue space. The genre originally originating in Bristol,UK is what inspired this name of this cafe to pay tribute to this niche music genre. With a custom typeface made for the cafe/venue space it conveys they dark atmospheric tone of the genre as well as a tribute to the many print materials of the genre.

Client Brief
For this project, I was asked to create a new brand identity for a new cafe based around the Trip-Hop genre. Not only would this be branding for a cafe but also a music space for artists to perform within the cafe. From a custom typeface and identity I was tasked with creating a unique cafe based on the genre of music.

 Behind the Process

One of the first steps I took when starting this project out was research! Trip hop was not a genre of music I was familiar with prior to this assignment, so I not only needed to embrace myself in the music but I also needed to learn its history. Through research it allowed me to take a step forward with the name of the cafe I was going to create this brand for. Through lots of drafting and planning I eventually landed on "The Bristol". This name is based off the city in England where Trip Hop originated from and where major groups like Massive Attack came from.

Custom Typeface

For this project I was not only tasked with creating a complete brand identity, but also creating a custom typeface. When creating the custom typeface we were randomly assigned a pre existing font to be the foundation of our new type. Alongside with the font we had to create a typeface that matched well to our assigned genre. In this instance my font was based of Aktiv Grotesk and was made to fit the aesthetic of trip-hop.
